    Poem Commentary

My daughter wanted to give her Grandfather, my father, a poem for his birthday this year.  When she came to me and asked me to write it my heart smiled grandly.

    Granddaddy

There is so much that I could stand here and say,
But first I must thank God for you on your special day,

No one can compare or stand tall in your place,
Never sad, always expressing a bright smiling face,

You are fun, hilarious, and extremely smart,
That’s why I pick you to take me to the park,

When I need help and can’t resolve my homework,
You show me patience and assist without one smirk,

Your imagination is huge and just as broad as mine,
With a demeanor that is no less than humble and kind,

You know the answer to every question I ask,
Full of knowledge, my history book to the past,

When I am bored you always find something to enlighten me,
Nothing complex but simple, unique like a lock and key,

You make me believe that anything and everything is possible,
Inspiring me to reach goals rounding me into someone remarkable,

When I grow up I’ll pray God sends me someone just like you,
A man, a father, a granddaddy that mimics all that you do,

But that’s a long time away so I won’t get in any hurry,
You taught me to go slow and enjoy life with all its glories,

So on this day that you turn seventy –five,
I want to say thank you God for keeping my Granddaddy alive!

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
