Poem Commentary

For my sister, Donna Rose

Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel
by Dale Garrow

I used to walk down the country road's winding hills
At the heels of one of my many sisters
Named Rose
Following her to what end
Wherever the road goes
We stopped one day near a neighboring barn
Vacant now of farm animal life
Once bustling of strife
Now just a retreat for pigeons to seek
Haven
We arrived in time to see an innocent bird
Fall to its sudden death
From a hurled stone
Of a proud teenaged boy
My sister Rose swept the fallen
Into her hands
As her tears of sorrow
Ran from her cheeks
She preached a sermon to that boy
Of all the creatures that God loved
Now minus one
How angry and sad
He must be
Rose made him vow
To abstain from taking an innocent life
Ever again
Proudly I walked behind my sister Rose
On that day I now know
She was no longer just another sister,
Now a protector, and a guardian angel.

Family is the glue

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
