Poem Commentary

We lost our very special one of a kind Mother a few years back after a long drawn out illness that was very hard to watch her go through the seasons of life and death.  We went through many emotions from anger to getting our hopes up that she would pull through it back to being hit with another battle of her illness and every emotion one could go through.  Writing has helped me heal in many ways.  In "He Took You Slowly" is truly a poem about reflecting on what happened when it did and why it happened.  I know in my heart that God knew he could not have taken her from us the first time, second time, third time of her battles with her illnesses -  he knew we would not have survived, at least not in a way that would have been beneficial to anyone who needed us so he took her slowly to allow us to adjust to life without her even though it meant pain and suffering for our Mother.

He Took You Slowly

He Took You Slowly

by Debra Burlton

He took you slowly

It was His all Knowingly.

Even then, through all your pain; for us, you put up a fight

Lord knows you fought the rages of your illness with all your might.

He took you slowly

It was His all Knowingly.

At the time,

we had mixed feelings - fought desperately with our heart, soul and mind -

Help her fight this fight with her in so much pain

or no more suffering - it’s time to let her go. Lord, take her out of her misery; please Lord, do something for her just to her be kind.

Through our pain, tears and fears we did not realize; she was always in Your hands, here or there, your hands are the same.

He took you slowly.

It was His all Knowingly.

Daddy’s wife, someone’s sister, her Mother and Father already gone,

another’s best friend, an aunt to many, the grandchildren’s MaMaw,

our unconditionally loving - one of a kind Mother,

our hearts song you sang to us as you brightly lit our life as our guiding light!

He took you slowly.

It was His all Knowingly.

You took his lessons in your own style and stride

Always believing everything happens in His own time even if it takes a while;

in this life and the one after there is for everything a reason,

the Good book you told us has never has lied.

Knowing the stages of life and death come like wind with the changes of the seasons.

He took you slowly.

It was His all Knowingly.

Taking you too quickly just could not be

For he knew,

our loss would be so great

that at the time we could not see

that it was the circle of life, it was fate.

He took you slowly.

It was His all Knowingly.

He was protecting us all from being completely destroyed by the loss of you,

So important to Him you are; gone you had to go, for there is more important things for you to do.

He could have taken you sooner, but it was not be,

for it yet was not his will, it took us a while to see

as He knew it would have been the body, heart, soul and mind that He would need still

to continue his work while we are here, his purpose He needs us to have Faith and Believe.

He took you slowly.

It was His all Knowingly.

So He chose you to teach us all His lessons along the way

right up to that fateful day.

We couldn’t at times, wouldn’t at times believe we could survive without you.

It took the strength He gave you; passed down to us to see us through

Knowing our heart and soul would never again be same,

the pain simply may never sway

But it is by his Grace, we have our memories of you that will never go away

Nor will His lessons you taught us as we pray are here to stay

with your children, grandchildren, and more generations of your children to come.

He took you slowly

It was His all Knowingly.

Mom, your presence in our lives nor your loss was in vain.

It is in His will we trust and believe

along with our Faith that our prayers will be answered in His time.

Oh, how you are missed so.

It’s was just so hard to to let you go, for in our hearts it was just way to soon.

We have that faith you taught us; we’ll see you again some day on Heaven’s beautiful glowing moon.

For it is His all Knowingly

even through all your pain that is was just in our best interest that he took you slowly.

Wow, this one had a poetic theme that reminded a little bit of the background poetry of, "A Time to Kill." Also I really liked the curve balls you threw in their to get the readers grasp.... Wonderful work!

this was truly beautiful. A wonderful heartfelt memory of your mother. Cancer is such a terrible thing to watch loved ones suffer through. Though a tragedy it was wonderful that you were able to have the extra time with her. Very well done. 10 from me.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
