    Poem Commentary

    this is just a thought

    HOW WAS I TO KNOW?

HOW WAS I TO KNOW HOW HE FELT?

THOUGH WHEN OUR EYES MET MY BODY MELT.

HOW WAS I TO KNOW THAT HE CARED?

THOUGH WHEN HE SAW ME WITH YOU HIS EYES SHOWED FEAR

HOW WAS I TO KNOW THAT HE LOVED ME?

THOUGH I HAD DREAMS OF US STANDING BY YHE SEA

HOW WAS I TO KNOW THAT HE UNDERSTOOD MY SILENT PLEES?

THOUGH THEIR WAS A CONNECTION WHEN HE LOOKED AT ME

HOW WAS I TO KNOW THAT HE SAW MY HEART?

THOUGH I ALWAYS KNEW HE CAPTURED IT FROM THE START

    I KNOW NOW

HE FINALLY GAINED COURAGE TO STAND LIKE A MAN

THOUGH HE HAS DIED-IN HIS BOOK, MY NAME IN RED

    ON A FLOWER FILL BED

AND THE WORDS I DREAMT OF ALWAYS

    ‘‘I UNDERSTOOD IN EVERY WAY’’

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
