IN DARKNESS DREAD

In darkness dread and waking dream,
I fall from the heart's pure shore.
Lost, alone; Oh God where are you?
I am silent in my need.
In darkness dread I plead.

Alone and lost, broken, falling;
I cry out, "Where? --- Oh where are you?
Have I failed? Has pride sealed my fate?"
Come oh Lord, ------- Save me from this dark dread.

Give me strength to see beyond,
To now and future.
Lend me heart and hope.
Let me know serenity!

In sun's red glow and darkness dread
Anger grows and darkness fed.

Evil waits beyond the door;
I swear my Lord, Oh how much more?
I darkness dread beyond the shore.

Craters lie below my feet;
Waiting to fall, I cannot sleep;
In darkness dread and anger deep.

Awake! Awake! My soul arise!
Lift your eyes up to the skies!

See Him now; My Savior comes,
With red sky fires and distant drums!

If all else fails and heaven calls;
Lord ----- Dear Lord ------- Am I worth it all?

I've fallen hard, I cannot rise.
Yet, I lift mine eyes up to the skies.

Where, Oh Lord, do you live?
In my heart? Forgiveness to give?

Darkness dread and all alone,
I fall from grace and heaven's home.

Anger rules; bitterness grows;
Take these from me or I shall lose;

Heart and soul-----
Future and hope-----
In darkness dread, I cannot live!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
