LIKE CANCER

As the wind blows,
I drift away
never to return.
I float through
flying in air
my skin starts to burn

The wounds grow deep
destroying my flesh
I burn through the fire
a simple life
with no pain
Is that what I desire?

People stare
they call on me
they ask me for the answer
They say ignorance is bliss
but flows through my veins
faster than deadly cancer

Why you?
Why me?
Why life?
why does the rose
have the thorns
that cut you like a knife?

They still stare
and they pleed
Do you have the answer?
I lay back
Then I die
Because life is like cancer
Not knowing when to cry.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
