    MAN (2)

    Man.
    He is like a felon
    Condemned, nay, awaiting the hangman,
    His tenure is finite,
    And when the moment arrives,
He withers like leaves in the fall
    And passes on like floods.

    Man.
    As artificial as falsetto,
    A fanatic fantan fancier,
He thrives and thrives and burns out
Like a candle. He is like naught,
not in the least worth a farthing.

    Man.
    He that a woman conceives,
    The seed of fantasy
    And a masterpiece of nature.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
