    MAN (4)

    Man.
The earth's center of nature's attraction,
    Of life an active participant,
    Once driven out of Eden,
    Cursed and sanctioned.
    Once granted a pardon
And back to paradise he returned,
But the beat in there had changed,
Every good thing now he struggles to achieve.

    Man.
In the likeness of Him he hath created,
But enemy of himself he is,
    A hypocritical owl,
    He lacks the patience
    To await his own time.
He seeks what is not lost - seeks and seeks
Until his doom he personally designs
And wakes up a sleeping dog
    To behold his own peril.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
