Marching to the Promised Land

Marching to the Promised Land

(sung to the the tune of a military chant)

Every night I kneel and pray
To live to march for another day
That the earth is hard and the miles long
So the Lord can make our freedom strong

I marched for freedom when the king
Told them not to hear me sing
And praise the peace God gave to me
That day God set our nation free

I marched across the broken line
To an ancient hate from an ancient time
Where the grapes of wrath and peace were sown
I marched for freedom in its home

I marched across the ocean wide
When the fire came I marched in stride
Through pits of dirt and tanks of steel
So nations torn, by grace would heal

I marched on back when the devil came
To tempt the nations, kill and maim
I marched along to the rising sun
That day the whole world marched as one

I marched along to the lands of the east
To help the peasants keep their peace
So they could hear the Word I heard
And see the power of the Lord

I marched to save the Holy Land
Back to where the war began
To bring the peace that I received
Back to where it was conceived

Every night I kneel and pray
To live to march for another day
From the mountain tops to the desert sands
We're marching on to the Promised Land

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
