Missing Superman

Poem Commentary

To my father who died suddenly last summer.  He was superman. We miss you.

Missing Superman

He was born into poverty
not a loving home
A boy who deserved better
just a reason to roam
He didn't finish high school
but the Navy was his means
He made up with determination
what he lacked in family genes
With a brilliant mind and charming smile
he won the heart of his wife
Then all four of us were born
and thus began his life
A pilot by trade and a true friend indeed
He never turned his back on someone in need
A man of many talents
he could fix most anything
But although he tried (for our aggravation)
he couldn't carry a tune and sing
An aggravator, a procrastinator,
a accidental savior to some
He always seemed to come to the rescue
when we did something dumb
Some would call him superman
though it would have probably made him mad
We just thought he would always be there
and we all called him Dad.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
