My Friend

My Friend

My friend, I stand in the judgment box now

And I feel you’re partly to blame

On earth we walked together day by day

But never did you tell me the story

My knowledge then was very dim

And you could have led me to Him

Though we lived together on earth

You never told me about the second birth

And now I stand this day

Condemned because you failed to mention Him

You taught me many things, that’s true

But I learn now that it’s too late

It’s you alone who could have saved me from this fate

We walked by day and talked till night

Yet you showed me not the light

You let me live and love and die

Yet you knew I would never live on high

Yes I called you friend in the past life

And trusted you through pain and strife

Yet in coming to this dreadful end

I can not call you my friend

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
