    Number One

Why is it so hard to believe?
Why do I have to prove myself
To the One who gave me life?
Why do I have to complicate life?
    Try to create life
In the image of my own confusion?

I try so hard to be the best.
    I don't want much
I just want to be number one.
    The irony is
    As long as I try
    I'll never make it!

As long as I keep on trying to be number one
I am saying that I am not.
I can never be number one
    Until I stop trying
    Stop fighting against myself
    And the Life within me.

    I need to stop trying
    To be the best,
And begin being what I am
    A living reflection of God.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
