    Perfect

    Perfect, Oh how hard I try to be;

    The more I try the more I see I may never be;

    With each passing day I see one more flaw develop in me;

    As I grow I see how frail and flawed my flesh can be;

    Mind and body are continually failing me;

    The words I seek are never there to greet;

    My heart forever leads me on the road of hurt and regret;

    Long did my soul did fret;

    Until one day;

    I saw the man in me and he was not the man I was;

    I found that the man I am may be flawed;

    But my soul has grown strong;

    So as hard as I try my flesh will never be as perfect as I would like it to be;

    For that is not up to me;

    Yet it is the soul I shall strive to develop in me;

    For that is truly me and what I hope to be;

    So prefect I try, Perfect I pray, and Perfect I shall be

    made me cry.

    Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
