    "Absent Father"

I still thank god for my father
    Eventhough he never bothered
On one hand I can count the times we shared
Sometimes I don't think he cared
I cried to my mom "where's my dad?"
She would sit there looking very sad
Always told me she didn't know
Says one day he decided to go
But I continued and continued to cry
Even found myself asking god why
But as I got older and lived my life
I realize some men run instead of making a sacrifice
Run from the responsibilites of being a man
Instead of being all that he can
So there's my mom a single mother
Holding it down like no other
Taking on the role of both mom and dad
As a child I was confused and sad
Thought it was something I did to push him away
Every night I would kneel and pray
Praying that he would come home someday
You see there is ONE man in my life
He's the only one that paid the price
    My heavenly father up above
The one I would forever continue to love

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
