    Ribbon

The ribbon he tied so tightly around my wrist
    Fit closely around my heart
But I wouldn’t be another girl on his list
So we were doomed from the start

The ribbon fit closely around my heart
But I know the games that he can play
So we were doomed from the start
Even when he begged for me to stay

I know the games he can play
The moves that he likes to make
Even when he begged for me to stay
That was a chance that I could not take

He wanted to write my name down
But I wouldn’t be another girl on his list
So I dropped his ribbon to the ground
The one he tied so tightly around my wrist

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
