    Shade

I saw you passing by me
And I heard the remarks you made
No pity hides in your laughter
As I lay shivering in the shade

And the clothes I wear were once yours
But I had to pick and rummage through
To find the warmth from your throw aways
    But that’s oblivious to you

And the food I eat you’ve eaten
But it doesn’t taste the same
Trash cans are my feeding grounds
And fate alone is mine to blame

And when I wake to your stomping
To put fresh blood on your shoes
    I can’t defend my certainty
Or fight the six of you

And when you see me begging
With a torn paper cup in the rain
Just know that I have no doctor
And nothing to kill the pain

So when your conscience tugs you
And pulls pennies from your purse
I know Christmas time is coming
The gift of giving is a seasonal curse

So when you step around me
Or gasp at the smell of my shame
    Enjoy the seasons greetings
As I lay shivering in the shade

Sorry I haven't commented sooner. I really love this. It's so true, unfortunately. Thanks for this, more people need to open their eyes.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
