Sista Salute

Sometimes sistas want to laugh, scream or even cry.
We complain about men and the days gone by.
Turning to each other when our hearts want to sigh.
And encourage one another til our spirits are lifted high.
Through hard times and the storm we'll ever draw nigh,
The first to have ya back, we're quick to ride or die.
Insisting you don't quit, determined to make you try.
Always the one pondering life and asking the question why.

Sistas go out of their way to show that they care.
Their love is evident when she lays her heart bare.
She'll stand supportive when life seems unfair.
And bring you through your moments of despair.
She'll take the challenge and accept the dare.
Always taking less than her deserved apportioned share.
In her silence, her strength and presence are still there.
With confidence to compliment another's clothes or hair.

Her own horn, she has no reason to toot.
Emotions in check, her mind resolute.
Yeah, she's the one, bitches think is cute.
The one to make ya man holla and hoot.
Leave you looking stoopid while coming across astute.
You'll hate even her simpliest attribute.
Her 'tude' she won't change to suit.
These are the reasons, my Black SISTAS, I salute.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
