    Strays / Because of Lee

We are tested, did we fail?

Not today, in the Safeway parking lot.
We circled the stray in our SUV's and compacts -
throwing concerned glances at each other -
    looking for the wayward parent.

Not that Sunday morning, after church,
    when motorists and cyclists stopped
to find the frantic mother of a wandering child.

But, we did fail, many years ago,
when a little boy named Lee was not circled
    by concerned witnesses -
and was never returned to us.

It is because of Lee that I circle.
