    Sweet Gracie

Gracie was my dear sweet little chow dog, that I had to have put to sleep.
    This poem is for her....

    "Sweet Gracie"

My sweet little Gracie, you're such a good girl!
And the best Christmas present in all the whole world!

What a happy and cute little puppy you were!
Bright eyes, waggy tail and soft, fluffy fur!

I loved you in an instant!  And right then I swore
That we would be best friends forever more!

We've had fun together, haven't we Grace?
Hey, is that a smile I see on your face?

You know that I love you, and I'm hating this too!
But it's my job, Gracie, to take care of you.

So I can't let this continue, with you sick as you are.
Chewing and digging, all patchy and scarred.

You can't get any rest, you can't even play.
And I can't let you suffer any longer this way.

They can't make you better, and it just isn't fair!
But there's One who can heal you, so I'm sending you there...

You just lay still now, and close your brown eyes.
Just as you've stayed with me, I won't leave your side.

You rest, my sweet Gracie, and I'll try to explain
The place that you're going where there is no more pain.

There's no fences, no fighting, everyone lives in peace
So you can run freely without even a leash!

No need for a collar, they all know you're mine!
And yes, I will be there, when it comes my time.

Ten seconds or ten years, the time is the same.
And you'll just have arrived when I'm calling your name.

And oh, my sweet Gracie, what fun we'll have then!
We'll do all of our favorite things over again!

You can help me pull weeds, and shake all the dirt out!
We'll run and we'll roll and we'll bark and we'll shout!

I skip rocks down the sidewalk and when you bring them back,
I'll get down on my knees and we'll play "Attack!!"

We can play fetch with your favorite red ball!
I'll blow bubbles while you jump and bite at them all!

I'll let you chase the broom as I'm trying to sweep,
And at night you can cuddle up close as we sleep.

Just think, Little Gracie, no itching, no sores,
You'll be healthy again, a puppy once more!

I know it's the right thing, but still, this is hard.
It'll be empty and lonely in the house and the yard.

It's okay Gracie, yes, I'm all right, see?
I don't mean to cry, now don't worry 'bout me.

You just go to sleep now, my sweet little Pup,
And you'll feel all better when you wake up.

And don't be afraid Girl, I'll see you again.
I promise I'll find you when my time here ends.

But oh, how I'll miss you, my sweet Gracie Girl.
Until I can join you in that Heavenly world.

I've never had a friend as precious as you.
No one more loyal or loving or true.

So thank you, sweet Gracie, for being my friend.
And for letting me love you so, right to the end.

    And now I must say it, for the last time it's right;
"Say Good night Gracie"...  My Gracie...  Good night....

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
