The Air is Not Enough

Poem Commentary

everywhere i go, people are in love.  they show it in their faces when they try not to.  that held back feeling is in songs..on tv..in chick flicks..and on my sisters face now that shes engaged.  and when i see this i wonder if it can happen to me and i look at the one i think of...but know it will not happen for me.  because he will never see me that way.

but u should interpret it as u please!

The Air is Not Enough

The twinkles in their eyes
blur the definition
they become shiny glass
so breakable but so beautiful

Their faces so soften
mouths quivering
between a gut-wrenching smile
and a sob

There is so much
the hands cannot hold it
the heart cannot bare it
The air is not enough

Nothing can hide
all is betrayed in the rasp of their voices
the delicacy of their faces
the gentlly, slightly controled fire in their skin

They show me what it looks like
They show me what it could be like
How easy it is for them..
For as I courageously allow my glassy gaze to find Him

He does not see me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
