The Ballad of Wendy and Me (part III)

    (...continued)

Though she labored at her duties

    unaware of her effect

    I feared of her reaction

    and my overtures reject

    As I tread with trepidation

and resolved to make a friend

    I made musings and suggestions

all of which, I would defend

But we all must see in retrospect

    our vision, now acute

of the errors that we committed

in the course of our pursuit

    When, our noblest of intentions

    yet have somehow gone astray

we retreat to lick our wounds

that we may fight another day

    Then I received my notice

    from the constable at arms

a complaint was lodged against me

    setting off the law alarms

    I would soon face inquisition

and a challenge to my truth

    should I die upholding honor

or contend a trial of youth

    For the magnitude of fury

    which directed at my shield

is designed to make me suffer

more than fair to make me yield

Of beaten brow with much dishonor

    a bitter tear I shed

who was I, to think me worthy

pray, where have I left my head?

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
