    The Color of My People

    It all began in Genesis
That I believe my people were blessed,
God took the dust into his hands
And in his own image created man.
Our people have a history full of pain, grief and ecstasy
    Joy, oppression and victory.
The color of my people who are created in many hues
Skin as dark as a hersey bar, oh! and just as smooth.
Hair tighter than wool, eyes as dark as coal
I think, it's in my people's eyes that you're able to see their souls.
    Skin that's creamy as caramel,
Locks of curls that defy straightness...on it's way to kink
Eyes so hazel they appear to be on fire,
    Skin so pale it's colorless,
    Hair so fine it's limp,
Eyes so blue like endless sky.
    The color of my people
Encompasses inner strength that rises above the world's weaknesses,
It's composure in the midst of adversity,
    Victory over racism and oppression.
Unspeakable joy during times of pain and grief.
The color of my people is HUMAN!
    Green for growth and prosperity,
Gold for the riches and accomplishments,
Black from the bruises of slavery,
Brown from the dirt, God made Me!
Pure white souls clothed in red,
From the blood that our Savior shed.
    It all began in Genesis
    When God created my people.
It will all end when my people
Tired and weary, lay down to rest.
    It is in their graves
    Their bodies will be found,
But their souls will have risen Heavenbound.
The weight of COLOR will cease to be
    Of any use in eternity
And my people receive their just reward
To dwell in the presence of our Lord.

    well written

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
