    Poem Commentary

Written 2002 - to my Muse TN

    The Gift

    I offered you my heart
    a precious gift indeed
    but you had no capacity
    perhaps you had no need
how strange the sound my heart now makes
    when I think of you
    just a tiny whimper
    my gift you did refuse

    My love was not enough
to melt your heart so cold
you simply walked away and left
    a chasm in my soul

I don't know why you closed the door to me
    I'll never understand, but
I will go, my gift I'll keep and
    never knock again

On days when there's no sun
    your life seems overcast
    loneliness your companion
    memories from the past
    please know my dearest muse
my love for you was true
my heart, my soul, my gift
    I offered once to you.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
