Poem Commentary

Heaney Inspired poem about seeing the world in a different away when you group up.

The Other Side

They say the grass is greener on the other side,

And beneath my feet it starts to dull,

Over there, they trees sway free and lively,

Around me the trees seem to whisper words –

Remembering how they used to be green.

The sun seems to set on the other side,

The creatures yawn and stretch with its warmth,

But here, like clockwork we enter our beds,

No use praying that I will be woken –

By the swaying of trees or the rooster,

I know over there they would not yet wake.

I walk the same path as I used to do,

But they daisies are gone, just like my soul,

And I look over, wishing I was them,

With their colourful trees, plants and – hearts,

If only I could fall in love again,

If only I could feel the summers breeze,

That would be too much to ask from this world.

But I remember my childhood full of joy,

How butterflies used to sparkle up high,

The frogs would bellow and bring me to them,

I was the adventurer, king of all.

That is why it hurts to look over there,

Watching the grass greener than my own,

All because we were too greedy in life,

Not realising the mistakes we made,

So pretending that there is another place,

Like what this graveyard looked like then,

Helps me live within these stony walls,

And my nature is only a dream away.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
