The Past

The Past

I fear it more, and more than most,

With creeping pride it likes to boast.

It follows like a shadow ghost,

To stalk its darling victim host.

The host lets out a weep of deep,

The shadow closer moves to creep.

The host is seeking gains to reap,

But Shadow even haunts in sleep.

The shadow will not keep its peace,

It stays for a prolongèd lease,

And on the coast rejects release;

It’s got a vessel there to tease.
