Poem Commentary

The Red Balcony

Standing on the red balcony

a palm tree nearby,

green branches touching the window,

overlooks the ocean.

A crash; the salty air

brings a cool breeze

the humid heat abated.

A faint music,

the crash of waves,

croak of coquis

more beautiful

than any album,

“sounds of Hawaii,”

a tourist attraction.

The air, humid, heavy

full of life

the smell of plumerias

with every breath

In the front, more pine,

Orchids, avocados, lilikoi.

Guava, Hibiscus, mangoes.

So much fruit, flowers.

More than you know

what to do with.

Still, we have no cedar.

We have ample substitute.

Between, the forest.

Pine, guava, orchid

all fighting for supremacy

for the sun.

Little do they know

There is enough

For all of them.

Meanwhile, a lilikoi falls

cracks against the rock

the color of the cut,

orange and yellow,

oozing from the tough

flesh of the fruit.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
