The Sculptor

The Sculptor

A blank block of granite—
     impassive, impartial;
          an empty page.

Chopping out chunks of it—
     imperfect in form,
          complete in his mind.

Carefully chiseling it,
(cutting and chipping, routing and clipping)
     improving rough places,
(smoothing and rubbing, sanding and scrubbing)
          perfecting detail.

Illuminating light;
     imparting, impressive—
          time bound in form.

Yes we sculptor words and sometimes it seems like chiseling granite. I believe the right words makes or breaks a poem. Sally

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
