The Turning Point

What will be the turning point?
   The final straw?

Obviously we're going there....
   Like an uncontrollable freight train!

Steaming down the tracks,
   Whistle screaming to passers-by,
      No working brake system,
         No way to stop!

Am I the only one aware
   Of this catastrophe ahead?
      The only one "well" enough
To see it coming around the bend?

Am I the only one wondering
   How many casualties there'll be,
      How many lives
         will be changed
            FOREVER?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
