    Through the Window

My father was gone, lost within his new bride.
I was young, just past the age of five.
He let her in, along with her demons.
They came in the form of herself and her sons.
Being hit might leave a bruise.
A different form of abuse, they did choose.
I left that hell behind at the ripe ol' age of eleven.
Moving in with my mom and step dad would be heaven.
My mom protected me with an iron fist.
She did not know who all was on that secret list.
When the floor drops out from underneath you so many times, who do you trust when they smile?
I cannot change what has happened before,
I just know I'm forever torn.

OMG! Wow, such a complete and utter and clearly understood dillema, I have been there, too. Your story within your poem is almost identical to my childhood experience, except for a difference in ages. I totally got ya! It's a very real loss and sadness that is not talked about enough. Kudos!

Thank you. There are so many that have been there. I almost took it down out of fear someone would find out but decided to just release it. Thank you!!
