William

I know that you are tired
I can hear it when you talk
all that living you have done
 It seeps out
 So much crammed into
 so little time

I see how it leaves you bruised
 All that time spent
 chasing something
 could never catch
 Something you thought
 you couldn't live without

 But it took so much
 from you and
 never gave anything
 in return

 The best part of you
 kept buried so deep
 you didn't know yourself
 anymore

How can you swim back up
 out of it now?
With it still snapping at your
 heels

 Will it always be there?
 I suspect it will
 You know it too
 Better than me that it
 was all you wanted
and all you cared to know

Now that lost time lives in you
 Reminding you what happens
and giving you the promise of a
bright morning and a boat to steer

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
