Poem Commentary

This poem is about a mother that would not leave her child, in spite of the abusive relationship it requires her to stay in.

Winterbirds

They had not deserted the north, but stayed, stayed.
Wings held fast against currents that tried to break them.
They braved bitter winds and cold fronts, and stayed much
longer than they thought they would.
The season turned, yet they remained not oblivious
to the terrible frost that was forming.
They watched others fly away, in search of warmer skies.
The wind burned their eyes and skin as they flew into
storm after storm.
They tried to land but found no clear ground to welcome them.
Exhausted yet determined they circled, searching the
frozen tundra.
The white earth mocked them, and yet they stayed.
Their nests were somewhere down below, and they would not leave them.
