Wounded Soul

Poem Commentary

I rescued a wounded goose from a nearby park and drove it to the Coulee Region Humane Society in hopes of saving it. Unfortunately, the wound had happened in the spring; thus, the broken wing had calcified beyond repair. The wounded soul had to be put to sleep, but at least it would no longer suffer. I wrote this poem for the wounded goose and all the wounded souls out there...me included.

Wounded Soul

Fate has cast a mighty blow
  for the wounded
    the discarded
     the one-winged

Having to contemplate
  life alone
fending for self
  in a hostile environment

With obstacles to overcome
  while struggling to survive
amongst the brutal forces
  of not just nature
but that of society
  that of fellow flock
    turned foe

Save for a few friendlies
  wanting to rescue
the unfortunate cast off
  to ease its suffering
  to stop the cruelties
encountered and endured
  by the wounded soul

This is a true example of poetry. Unfortunately too often in life there are those who feel like we as people should be put down if wounded or not like others but I see that as wasted potential because there is always good to come from our wounds.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
