    A Gift

    I lay there silent and
    listen to you breathe.
How lucky I am to have you,
It's almost too hard to believe.

    I watch the rhythmic rise
    and fall of your chest.
    Careful, not to wake you.
I think sleep is for the best.

    As if you sense my
    innermost, hidden feelings,
    You roll over and turn
    your face to the ceiling.

    Your straw colored hair
    glistens in the morning light.
    Your baby blue-green eyes are
    such a wondrous sight.

    A sigh escapes your lips
as you turn to face me.
Will I be a good mom?
We'll have to wait and see.

    Little wrinkles in your skin.
Ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes.
I can't wait to see how you turn out,
    As I watch you grow.

    Dear God, Thank you,
    for the most precious child!
    To realize I'm a mother,
    Is just way too wild.

    Please help me to become
the best Mommy I can be.
    It's true! The best things
    in life really are free.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
