Poem Commentary

This note is just a reminder that when you have something beautiful, don't let it go. Know what you have, cherish it, protect it, do all you can to never let it go to ruin.

Know What You've Got

A young man leaving for the military is searching for gifts to give his family

His top priority is that the gifts be worthwhile and not outgrown

Something that succeeds the test of time, something to be cherished

Taking deep consideration into each gift, he had a plan

A beautiful pendant necklace with matching earrings and bracelet for his mother

Cufflinks, a new belt buckle, and tie clip for his father

After great thought, he decided to get his younger brother a Zannetti watch

He knew such a gift would be very expensive

But, the vision of his brother wearing such an elaborate gift was all it took

He passed the watch shop every day on the way home from work

And could not help but notice the handsome display that glistened in the window

Thoughts of his brother wearing this watch on interviews and dates brought tremendous joy

When the time came to buy this watch, he didn't hesitate

Before leaving, he presented these gifts to his family

His parents could not have been more proud of their son

Trying their gifts on, they knew these items would be forever relished

His younger brother seemed pleased with the watch and grinned from ear to ear as he put it on

Feeling he had made the right choice with the gifts, this solider was off to war

Time passed and the solider returned to visit his family

It brought tears to his eyes to see these gifts were still in mint condition

Except the watch that he had slaved to get

His younger brother had carelessly allowed it to become scratched

The face was broken and it barely told time

Remembering how long it took him to afford this gift, it was a painful sight

He could not help but feel grief the work put to waste
The younger brother had trashed a sought after treasure
