    Poem Commentary

The thought just popped out of my mind while i was reading the book wuthering heights. The scene when catherine died and heathcliff shouted "be with me always - take any form. - drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where i cannot find you. I cannot leave without my life. I cannot live without my soul!"

    be with me

    Like the summer's breeze,
    Welcoming with warmth,
    Embracing each part of you,
    All of my entirely.

    Submit you what I have,
Even the depth of my soul
    I would give,
For you to linger on my side.

    Call me silly,
    Even simpleton if it pleased.
    Yet, I'd be rather wither,
    than be in solitary -
    not having you with me.

    If you would desert me,
    What life would that be?
    Maybe a pine existence,
    A putrid,
    Or a storm of torment.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
