    Beginning

When the rain began to fall,
    so did I,
    born in water,
    warm and safe as I
    entered the world.

My mom and dad named me Ceara.
    They wanted a girl,
so they got a skinny girl
    with a perfect mouth
    and strong cheekbones.
They got a brown haired, tall girl
with a passion for animals and art.

    I arrived at my home,
    quickly after birth
with millions of white candles lit for my arrival.
Dancing in my new mother's arms
    to goddesses singing.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
