    DADDYS GIRL

Growing up I had everything a child could possibly hope for

But I was always knocking at one particular door

Every so often the door would come open

I’d walk in but it was never like I was hoping

Mom and dad divorced because dad would drink

He would drink so much until he couldn’t think

My mom took care of my brother and I

Daddy use to call us up just to say hi

As time went on so did he

I wondered if he ever thought about me

We never had the relationship like I had dreamed

I realized things aren’t always like they seem

Even though my dad wasn’t there for me

I was gonna be the best daughter that I could be

He did cause my heart to have grief and harm

When he did come around I was there with open arms

Daddy tried to stop drinking in 2005

That’s when my dream started to come alive

In may we had lunch it was our first in years

Even more special because he didn’t order any beers

Ironically that lunch was sadly our last

Later that month my father had passed

I thank God for that moment before his time was gone

To be DADDY’S GIRL for just one day is better than a lifetime of none!

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
