    Days Gone By

Just look at those sad eyes, imploring me to make things right.
To mak everything make sense in a nonsensical word is tough.
It makes me long for the days when you came to me with a scrape,
And a kiss and a band-aid were always good enough.

I wish I knew all the answers to make things right for you.
Wish I could tuck you under my arm and keep you safe from all dangers.
Like when you wee just a little boy and I taught you right from wrong.
When I cautioned you about not talking to strangers.

Watching you grow has been an amazing adventure, son.
Seeing you learn new things and work hard to understand the world.
Helping you here and there, and holding your hand at times
Biting my lip quietly as you discovered the myseries of girls.

I can honestly say that I have done all that I know how to do
When it comes to teaching you what it means to be a real man
And now I have to step back and let you take it from here
Don't look down, son. I know in my heart that you can.

You can be anything that you want to be in this world.
That's the beauty of living in a free country such as we do.
But there is a line of morality that we must never cross over
The rules of contemporary society suddenly pertain to you.

I have sheltered you from the world since you were born
And I will never regret amoment of our life together
But I have to tell you that must learn things about life
Some of the choices that you make will follow you around forever

You have a smile that melts my heart and warms my soul
And a hug that makes me love you even more and more
I don't want to think that there might come a day - soon
When it's that hug and that smile that I will long for

All these years, all the memories I hold dear of you and me
Just spending time together and laughing till our sides hurt
Or talking in teh dark about things that made us sad
Trying to find ways to make all of the broken things work

I love all three of my babies with all of my heart and soul
That's why it hurts so much to think one of you might have to leave
This family is everything to me, and I will do everything to protect it
It is who I am - it's the very breath that I breathe

I made a promise to you on the very day that you were born
That whenever you really and truly needed me, I would be there
That I would do whatever it was that I had to do
To make sure that you knew how much that I cared

Well, the time has come for me to make good on that promise
And the stakes are much to high for me not to succeed
I'm your mother, and it's my job to make sure that you are cared for
To see to it that you have everything that you ever need

And so I am here, standing strong right by your side
To hold your hand, and to comfort your heart
You need not worry about what may come in the days ahead
We are connected in such a way that we will never be apart.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
