    Father Do You Love Me?

    Father do you love me?
You've hurt me so much it's really hard to see.
    You've stomped me down
    Down to the ground
You treat me as if I'm not your child.
You've said hurtful words to me
    That really lowered my self-esteem.
And when I did something wrong
    You'd punish me year long.
    Father do you love me?
I'd try to be what you wanted me to be
But in the end I see
That it wasn't the real me.
And being the real me wasn't good enoough for you
So everything I did was unruly or untrue.
    Father do you love me?
    I've made a big mistake
    And yes you're angry
But why do you look at me that way?
Like I disgust you and I'm scum of the Earth.
Like I'm not all at any worth.
    You know it hurts
    I feel so cursed
You say you love me, you really do
But you only say it because you're suppose to.
    I'm sorry to disappoint you
But I can only be who I feel is true.
    Father do you love me?
    You probably don't
    But I love you.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
