    For My Sister

You were running in the dark of night,
You were running with all your might.
I drew you back and I hurt you.

You were free and flying high,
You were graceful in the sky.
I knocked you down and I hurt you.

You were the picture of youth hanging with your friends,
Your time, money, and kindness you would lend.
I locked you up and I hurt you.

I know sometimes you get mad at me,
I wish you could see what I can see.
When you were running, I saw a wall,
When you were flying high I saw a trap set for your fall.
When you were popular I saw your friends leave when they had drained you of all.

You may never believe these things are true,
I will be the first to admit that I have hurt you.
But what you don't know and what you cannot see,
Is that hurting you is hurting me.
But I will hurt you in love
Before I let you be hurt by something you may not rise above.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
