    I Heard Your Voice Today

    I heard your voice today
It struck me more than the words you had to say
    Shakey, trembling fom suppressed tears
It said that in moments, you had aged years
The shock was still evident, it could be heard
And the sorrow as you searched for words
And the tragic story you had to tell
A picture of the condition of our world; a living hell
It happened in a church, in the very sanctuary
There for you a feeling of security and peace will never again be

One man, one gun, hundreds of bullets, and several dead
You with that memory forever in your head
We question, we wonder, and we cry
We cannot help but ask God why
Three adults, five teenagers dead in a moments time
It is taking it too lately to say it's just a crime
They say life goes on and for you it will
Eventually in months and years the scars will heal
But the horror and tragedy will with you stay
I know, because I heard your voice today.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
