Poem Commentary

Inspired by a friend who suffers alzheimers disease.

FOR THE LAST TIME THAT I KNOW YOU

Just once more, let me touch you,
I know this won't even mean anything to you,
but to me this is every view,
this is every piece of my being needs from you,

Just let me feel the magic once more,
then afterwards, will see me no more,
yes, we've done this before,
so what change would this bring only once more,

This will be for all the deeds left undone,
words left unsaid, and then i'll be gone,
As we dwell in our arms, every move one by one,
All the memories will be swept away, all as one,

This will mean a lot to me,
and for everything that has not been gone,
just before this disease kills me again,
just before this forgetfullness dumbs my brain again,

And now, while i still remember your name,
while i know your love runs through my veins,
and please, while i still know i live,
and not after the day i leave,

This sickness will make me forget you easily,
though i never wanted to,
this indeed will do,
its easy for me to forget you, its the function of the disease,

so please, just for this last time that i know you,
let my soul cling to the heavens with you...

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
