    FREEDOM

    My heart beats in anticipation
as I stand at the edge of the cliff
    with a little trepidation

I want to swoop off that cliff
    and dive down with exhilaration
and dance upon the waves like the seagulls

My heart might burst in sheer joy
the taste of salt air upon my tongue
    and the sheer appreciation

    That I am free
It is far sweeter than any honey-wine
    this briny taste of freedom

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
