    Grand Canyon

How could any river this length
and breadth have carved a channel
in the ageless stone, so awesome
and monumental as this Grand Canyon?

    The Missouri, in Montana
has more water, and much further
to travel in its quest of sea.

The Danube moves more soil each year
    than this canyon once contained.
Yet when compared, the Danube pales.

Yes, the cliff edge falls away
in breathless bounds to touch, below,
a river which in silence cries,
"God created me; and I created this!"

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
