Growing Old: To Alzheimer victims

As the road I trod gets long Every step I take is slow Trying to find my way home Wondering which way do I go They told me my mind would fail And I must stay close to home Now it is empty, like a pail As I stand here all alone I think I am still a young lad Running and playing in the sand Now I feel so confused and sad Will someone lend a helping hand? I didn't ask for this disease It just showed up one day My mind went into a freeze And would not listen to what I had to say I want to be young again Before I leave this place Help me, Lord, to understand Before I finish this race Now my life is almost gone And my mind is now at rest I no longer struggle alone As I go to my eternal rest. This piece feels long and short at the same time. It forces the reader to contemplate the sufferers plight while at the same time offering no solutions. It hits home for me as my Mother suffers with the dreaded disease. Thank you for your words.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
