Have you seen this child

Poem Commentary

This poem is about me and how I should have loved myself more.

Have you seen this child

Have you seen this child
He has been missing for awhile
Some say he ran away
Some say he drowned
I say he is lost within the crowd

Regretting his decisions and the choices he has made
Reliving the same night day after day
He told me in his anger how frustrated he was
How nobody loved him or gave him a hug
But I shrugged it off and thought he was crazy
Thought he was not man enough and couldn't take it

I Should have seen the warning signs
Maybe I could have saved him
Now he is gone and I just can't take it
If you have seen this child
Tell him that I am sorry
I should have been there for him

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
