Poem Commentary

Written for my first grandson.

HEY LITTLE DUDE

Hey little dude, you look so sweet,

Your Daddy's so proud he can hardly speak.

He says you got his ears, his hands, his feet.

You're a sign of his love for your mommy.

Now hush-a -by and don't you cry.

Your Mommy and Daddy are by your side.

Your every need they will supply.

It don't get better than this little guy.

But do not worry, do not fret.

Don't be getting' your self upset.

Of all the little dudes I have met,

You're the best-es, you're the best-es,

You're the best-es yet.

So ride your pony and clap your hands.

March to your own band.

Learn to stand and be a man

Doing the very best you can.

If you're brave and if you're bold,

There are wonders to behold.

Question all that you are told.

Don't let your dreams grow cold.

Now hush-a-by and don't you cry,

Your Mommy and Daddy are by your side.

Your every need they will supply

And Grandma will sing you a lullaby.

I love the sincerity and simple but effective rhyme within this work.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
