I AM STILL BLACK

I AM STILL BLACK

They say Black is an attitude, it's how you act.
Um...No ...Black is a color as a matter of fact.
Well, you're not black enough
Or you're that other kind of black.
Well...in words that you can understand.
That is just whack.
No I don't rock braids, or wear a doo rag
I don't like basketball, and my pants don't sag.
My wife is my queen, and not my babies mama
Our home is a place of peace, because we don't do drama.
Our boys are my legacy that I would never abort.
And the state will never reprimand me for lack of child support.
I'm five generations removed from a slave
So society cannot tell me how to behave
I don't need reparations, don't speak ebonics
I'm not hooked on drugs and don't need hooked on phonics
I am an effectual intellectual
Who's manhood is more than just sexual.
Like a literary dictionary
If you can read me, you are extraordinary.
I know I'm different, and in this you can trust.
If you step to me, then respect is a must.
Like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King
My eye is on the prize, so think before you step in the ring.
I know my heritage, and where I come from
And i'll raise and replace the things that were undone.
So to my brothers out there who are 'bout it 'bout it.
Drop the lies and the false identity that has your mind clouded.
For you are Kings, scolars, and warriors true.
Be careful of the voice that you allow to define you.
Forget the TV, the athelete, or the Hip Hop song
Images of us that are just "Dead Wrong"
Remember all of those who died for your civil right
And know that you yourself are worthy of this fight.
To the rest - I hate to be forward, but you need to understand
That I am still black, and black is what I AM

I Really want to express this in so many different words to others and did not know how to explain myself. You really potrayed the power of words and how they move individuals thru there use. This is an extraordinary poem.

Thanks...I'm glad you enjoyed it. The power of any people is in knowing who they are. I just felt that we as black people have lost sight of our true identity. Thanks for reading.

A powerful content. It inflicts reflection upon the reader. Meditation at its best. I am proud of you for sharing this piece. Great Job!

Thanks again. I hope it inspires enough of a response that it causes us to delve a little deeper into our history and heritage as a people so that we can see the true richness of our culture and stop some of this foolishness that is plaguing our people.

True. What's most unfortunate is that I am really not interested in reaching society to change their opinion about us. Despite what most people believe, they know the truth about history. The problemis that we ourselves don't understand that we are more, and are meant for more, than what we have embraced concerning ourselves. Sad to say, but we have allowed others to define us to the point that we portray exactly what they say we are, and that is our fault. I just want us to seek our identity through our history as kings and queens, doctors, and inventors, instead of our physical attributes, skills and other endowments.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
