I Know Why

I Know Why
You, the blessed infant of God Almighty.
Heaven’s most favored child.
Conceived by the union of His grace and our disgrace.
Hands that embraced neither satin nor gold.
But they touched the wounds of a leper,
Dried a weary widow’s eyes.
Hands that parted a great sea.
Hands that clawed the ground at Gethsemane.
I can’t comprehend why God did what He did.
A sacrifice to justify our existence?
We tried to play games and be your friend.
Yet each time we fell flat on our faces.
Aaron, High Priest selected by You,
Cavorts with a golden calf.
Sons of Jacob, fathers to the twelve tribes,
Gag their brother and send him to Egypt.
David, a man after your own heart,
Covets another man’s wife, then has him killed.
Samson, thinking he’d gotten ‘lucky’,
While Delilah searches for her shears.
These were your chosen ones?
Destined to carry out your calling?
But then, you called my name;
And I thought…
When we spit in your face.
Your reply was “I love you.”
When we stripped you and hung you on a tree.
You said, “Father forgive them.”
You knew what eternity held for us,
And you couldn’t bear to be without us.
So you paid our debt in full.
That is the very reason you came.
Yes, I know why.

Lord, I didn’t comprehend why you did what you did.
A sacrifice to justify our existence?
We already proved we weren't worthy.
Perhaps time for another flood.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
