Poem Commentary

I was in a gas station worried about meeting deadlines and thinking of everything but what i was confronted with. I just could not believe someone would fill their children with hate. But i guess this kind of stuff happens every day.

judge me not

I want to tell you a story;

Of what happened to me today.

If you don’t believe me,

Then there is nothing more to say.

I walked into a gas station,

about two o clock to three.

Standing in line I happened to glance,

At the little girl on the side of me.

She looked at me with her big brown eyes,

And then she began to cry.

Startled by her reaction I bent down on my knees,

To find out what ailed her so and see if I could appease.

I asked her why a pretty girl would cry with such pain.

She stopped crying long enough to look at me,

And this is what she said.

You are the devil, my momma told me,

And I should never trust you ; cause you will only try to hurt me.

She said all white people are evil and untrue.

Startled by her response, my own eyes began to tear.

This sweet child already corrupt with someone else’s fears.

I looked into her eyes as I withdrew a ten dollar bill.

And I responded with kindness for all her worst fears.

What could I say to a child of about nine?

Do I tell her her mother is full of  of lies.

And they say that racism has gone away for good

But it made this innocent babe cry.

So what would you tell this child that clearly someone misunderstood.

I told her I love her just as God loves us all,

With that I gave her the ten and dried her tears,

And took my place in line.

I will pray for the woman who scarred her child so,

And hopefully one day the little girl can see through the deception.

When I walk to the pearly gates God is going to judge me,

Not on my race, or nationality, but my life of good or bad deeds.

So knowing that his judgment is the only one that’s true,

I will hold my head up proud, and pray for the ignorance that corrupts our youth.

Pray for the day that no one will say I hate you because of a color.

Your words speak the truth. People are taught to hate and distrust from the very beginning. Be it color or the way they dress. It has gotten worse instead of better. All we can do is our part and hope we make some impact in this world.

Yes racism works both ways. I am glad you could see past this womans ignorance and show this innocent child that hate is not the way. I wonder if this woman dares to sit in church and proclaim she follows the example of Jesus. If she does she's heaping those coals upon her head. Excellent poem with an excellent message.

thank you for your comment. If people realize that God does not judge us by our color, but by our actions in this life maybe people will act differently.

I found out that children only respond to things they have been taught and not all things are positive. thank you.

I will hold my head up proud, and pray for the ignorance that corrupts our youth. --- amen and extra prayers too for the parents and adult teachers that drives the engines of hate and confusion. So many people have grown up with biased and raciest delusions. Thank you for your prose and poetic thoughts that bring all this to light so that everyone can see more clearly. 10 for the content alone
